The Crack — Yeah, That’s Really What It’s Called
Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, it’s really called The Crack. It’s the local name for a cliff-lined swimming hole tucked about 3.5 miles deep into the Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness. But don’t let the name fool you — this spot delivers.
This trail is where red rock heat meets cold canyon water. Part cliff-jumping haven, part desert dreamland. Whether you're cannonballing into the blue or just sunbathing on slick sandstone, The Crack gives you that “I’m not checking my email today” kind of peace.
The Hike In: Bell Trail Stats
Trailhead: Bell Trail, off Forest Road 618 (I-17 Exit 298)
Roundtrip Distance: 7 miles (or 7.5 if using the overflow lot)
Elevation Gain: Around 600 feet
Terrain: Mostly flat, fully exposed, with rocky creekside sections
Dog Friendly: Yes, but not recommended in summer heat
This hike isn't super difficult, but don’t let the mileage and chill vibes fool you. It's exposed the entire way, and Arizona’s sun doesn’t play around.
Arizona Sun = No Joke
We say it all the time — but it’s worth repeating: Arizona sun is not a vibe. It’s a hazard. Every year, people hike out with one tiny water bottle and end up needing Search and Rescue.
What to Bring to Survive the Heat:
-
One gallon of water per person
-
Wide-brimmed hat
-
High-SPF sunscreen (reapply halfway)
-
Sturdy trail shoes or sandals you can jump in with
-
Early start time (6–7 AM is golden)
If you’re hiking past 10 AM in July, it’s like walking into a toaster oven. Go early or don’t go.
What Makes The Crack WildEx-Worthy
-
Cliff Jumps — Red rock ledges drop into icy creek water. If you’ve never backflipped off a canyon, now’s your chance.
-
Desert Oasis Vibes — Red canyon walls, cottonwoods, sun-warmed rock slabs, and freezing clear water.
-
Natural Lounge Zone — Sandstone shelves are made for naps.
-
Low-Key Local Energy — Weekdays are quiet. You’ll likely meet a Flagstaff hiker or a retiree named Hank doing flips.
Warnings and Safety Tips
-
There’s no cell signal. Download your trail map ahead of time.
-
Avoid this trail during monsoon season. Flash floods can happen fast.
-
Always scout the depth before you jump — ledges can be misleading.
-
Leave no trace. Pack out everything. Don’t trash the trail.
